can cars fly?

I get intregued by the sky,not the universe which we can not see but the blue sky that we can.Man can travel by land in his automobile and by air using an aeroplane.The distance between these two is generally a few hundred kilometers if not more.So we are typically wasting few hundred kms of travel space.So what can be done on this matter,we can either let the planes travel very close to earth or make cars that can fly justlike may be a helicopter or a jet.
The first idea seems dangerous as they can not travel close to population.The second one seems costly and also very artificial and film like,but seems possible
